If you’ve been seeing mahjong nights pop up everywhere and you’re wondering what the hype is all about, you’re in the right place. Mahjong is one of the most social, fun, and brain-boosting games you can learn, and we’re breaking it down in the simplest way possible. Whether you’re brand-new or just curious, this will help you understand why so many people are falling in love with this timeless game. 💗✨

Mahjong is a tile-based game that’s been loved for generations. In the United States, most players learn American Mahjong, which is played with four people, tiles, and an annual card with hands from the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL). Think of it as a mix of rummy, strategy, patterns, and a little bit of luck.

The goal is to build one of the hands on your NMJL card before anyone else at the table does.

What Makes American Mahjong Special

American Mahjong has a few fun features that make it unique.
• Jokers used as wild tiles
• The Charleston a signature passing phase that starts each round
• A yearly card with new hands every spring
These elements keep the game fresh, social, and exciting year after year.
